Philip Hughes |
One of the most popular cricketers in the Aussie team, the 25 year old Hughes, got a nasty blow when a short-pitch delivery from Sean Abott hit his head severely, missing his helmet. Informing the media about the star’s sad demise, the Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said, "It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away. He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday.” Talking about his last moments, the doctor told, “He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends”.
He also expressed his solidarity with the family of the deceased. “As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip's family and friends at this incredibly sad time. Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected", he said.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott also expressed condolences on the death of Hughes and described him as "a young man living out his dreams". Talking to the media he said, "His death is a very sad day for cricket and a heartbreaking day for his family. What happened has touched millions of Australians". "For a young life to be cut short playing our national game seems a shocking aberration. He was loved, admired and respected by his teammates and by legions of cricket fans", he told.
Born in 1988, Phillip Joel Hughes started his Test career in 2009 against South Africa. In the 26 test matches he played for Australia, he scored a decent 1535 runs including 3 centuries and 7 half-centuries. He also played 25 ODIs and scored 826 runs including 3 centuries, and 4 half centuries. The sudden demise of the promising batsman is really a sad episode that would bother the minds of the entire cricketing fraternity and sports lovers the world over.
