Born in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, and an IAS officer of 1966
batch, Dr Mahmoodur Rahman was an eminent personality and proved as a milestone in
the history of Aligarh Muslim University during his stint as Vice Chancellor. He is remembered for timely start of
academic sessions, getting the attendance system back to track, and reviving of
the campus mess system. Unfortunately, the great administrator and reformer of his
times is no more with us. He breathed his last on 7th July, 2017 in a hospital in Lucknow.
It was during the tenure of Dr Mahmoodur Rahman, that the AMU
Dental College, Bab-E-Syed gate and the university boundary wall were
constructed. The foundation of Gulistan-e-Syed Park which was formerly
known as Polo Ground, was also laid during his period. Besides the construction
of IG Hall for Girls, Sherwani Hall for Research Scholars were also constructed
during his tenure. His concerns for the University tempted the teachers to demand
a second term for him as VC as well.
In
addition to his pro-active as AMU’s VC between 1995-2000, Padamshree Dr Mahmoodur Rahman has achieved a lot during his
entire professional career. Among the noteworthy highlights of his career
include holding various administrative positions in Jammu and Kashmir.
He worked as an administrator of Punjab Wakf, as the member of Central Wakf Council Board, and as Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Parliamentary Affair. Being the incharge of Home in Jammu and Kashmir, he continued to organize Amarntath Yatra in the most difficult days from 1995 to 2000.
He has left a void that is hard to fill in the coming times. May ALLAH rest his soul in peace.
